Collagen: the hidden champion in our body

Collagen: der Hidden Champion in unserem Körper

Firming and Stability Through Collagen

When it comes to smoother, firmer, more youthful-looking skin, one term comes to mind sooner or later: collagen. Hardly any other substance is so frequently associated with skin firmness and elasticity. But what exactly is behind it?

Collagen is a natural component of our skin and plays a crucial role in its appearance. Over the years, however, the body produces less and less of it. The consequences become visible: The skin loses its firmness, fine lines appear, and facial contours look less defined.

But what exactly is collagen? Why does its production decrease over the course of life? And how can you support your skin in staying firm and supple for as long as possible?

The Framework of Your Skin

Collagen is the most important structural protein in the skin. Together with elastin and hyaluronic acid, it forms the stable framework that gives the skin support, firmness, and elasticity, and makes up about 30% of the total body protein. The collagen fibers are arranged like a fine network and, together with elastin and hyaluronic acid, ensure that the skin remains firm and resilient.

Usually, collagen is discussed in the context of declining elasticity and firmness in the face and the resulting formation of wrinkles. However, it does so much more in our body than just a firm face.

This large, essential protein is also found in bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, blood vessels, and connective tissue—so it can practically be found in all parts of the body. With its supporting function, it gives our body strength, structure, and elasticity. With its long chains of amino acids, which form a triple helix structure, this unique firmness and durability are created. 28 different types of collagen have already been identified in the body, of which types I to IV are the most common. Type I collagen is mainly found in the skin and plays a crucial role in maintaining elasticity and structure.

The Science Behind Our Strong Framework

Collagen production in the body is a complex process involving various substances and proteins. Here is a simplified representation:

  • Fibroblasts, a type of skin cell, receive signals from the body to produce collagen.
  • The fibroblasts convert amino acids such as glycine and proline into procollagen.
  • Procollagen is then modified into tropocollagen by enzymes and other proteins.
  • Several tropocollagen molecules combine to form fibrils, which form collagen fibers.

This process takes place constantly in the body, but as we age, our body produces less collagen, which can lead, among other things, to a decline in skin elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

As long as there is sufficient collagen, the skin looks smooth, plump, and elastic. As the amount of collagen decreases, this network gradually loses stability. The skin becomes thinner, drier, and less resistant to external influences.

Fun Fact: The word collagen comes from the Ancient Greek "kólla" and means "glue" or "adhesive".

Why Collagen Production Declines

Endogenous collagen formation is a natural process that takes place around the clock in the deeper layers of the skin. What many underestimate: with increasing age, this process slows down. Collagen production begins to slowly decrease as early as the mid-20s. The fibroblasts then synthesize collagen more slowly and less efficiently, while the cell division rate also slows down. At the same time, existing fibers are broken down more quickly. This imbalance leads to the skin gradually losing firmness.

However, skin aging is not just a matter of age. Other factors also influence how quickly endogenous collagen is broken down.

Who Are the Collagen Robbers?

There are various factors that influence premature skin aging through faster collagen breakdown. UV radiation is an important factor here. It can damage collagen fibers and significantly accelerate the natural aging process of the skin. That is why daily sun protection is one of the most important measures for maintaining firm skin.

General lifestyle also plays an important role. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, or an unbalanced diet can impair skin health and negatively affect collagen formation. Conversely, the skin benefits from a nutrient-rich diet, sufficient sleep, and a regular skincare routine.

Last but not least, genetics also influences how quickly the skin ages. Some people naturally have higher collagen production and preserve their skin firmness longer. Unfortunately, we have no influence over this.

However, by addressing the needs of your skin early on, you create the best conditions for well-cared-for, supple skin and a radiance that impresses at any age.

Supporting the Skin in the Best Way Possible

Even though the natural aging process cannot be stopped, you can support your skin in preserving its vitality and radiance for as long as possible.

A balanced diet provides important building blocks for collagen synthesis. Vitamin C plays a particularly crucial role in this. It is a natural co-factor and supports the formation of collagen. It is contained in more foods than you might think: including citrus fruits, berries, broccoli, or green leafy vegetables.

Daily protection from UV radiation is equally important. Those who consistently integrate sunscreen into their routine not only protect their skin from sunburn but also from premature skin aging.

In addition, skincare tailored to the needs of the skin can help improve the skin's appearance. Modern formulations with collagen, peptides, and antioxidant ingredients help the skin stay supple, well-cared-for, and elastic.

Suitable Skincare from Doctor Eckstein®

Especially for dry, demanding, or mature skin, targeted skincare with collagen can be a valuable addition to the daily routine. Collagen forms a protective film on the skin and visually smooths the surface structure.

The ACTIVE CONCENTRATE COLLAGEN COMPLEX intensively supplies the skin with moisture and provides a supple skin feel. In addition, the COLLAGEN BALSAM supports the skin during the day with nourishing ingredients and helps prevent moisture loss. For nighttime care, the COLLAGEN SUPREME offers rich nourishment, so that the skin can regenerate optimally overnight and look fresh and well-cared-for in the morning. For more intensive care, the refreshing and moisturizing COLLAGEN PACKUNG is suitable. Those who also want to firm and smooth their décolleté can pamper it with the DECOLLETE SUPREME.

To keep your own collagen in the skin for a long time, skincare products that protect or support endogenous collagen production with valuable ingredients are suitable. Vitamin C is one of the valuable ingredients that support collagen synthesis in the skin. Feel free to try our glowing yellow VITAMIN C GLOW DROPS.

As a daily sun protector under your daytime skincare and makeup, I recommend our ACTIVE CONCENTRATE SUN SHIELD SPF 50.

Products with antioxidants—such as our ACTIVE CONCENTRATE ANTIOXIDANT BOOSTER COMPLEX with 6 selected antioxidants for effective skin protection—can also make a valuable contribution here, as they protect existing collagen from premature breakdown.

Conclusion: Regardless of age, every skin has collagen—and every skin needs it. The right skincare makes the difference.
